Wie sich der Pastorenmangel lösen lässt
Many theological colleges – including the St. Chrischona Theological Seminary (tsc) – complain about a lack of theology students. At the same time, Christian congregations are desperately seeking new pastors. How can this pastor shortage be explained, and what can we do about it? Dr. Benedikt Walker, the rector of the tsc, calls for encouraging the younger generation.
tsc: Dear Benedict, what are the reasons for the shortage of pastors?
Benedikt Walker: Unfortunately, both the profession of pastor and the church itself are in crisis. Congregations demand a lot from pastors, expecting them to be the perfect all-rounder. At the same time, we find ourselves in a time when the Christian faith and the church are experiencing a massive loss of importance. Another reason for the pastor shortage is the large baby boomer generation currently retiring.
tsc: What needs to change in the professional profile of a pastor?
Benedikt Walker: Students cite fear of being overwhelmed as their main argument against serving in a church. One step in the right direction is to no longer specify voluntary work as an obligation in employment contracts. The younger generation wants talent-oriented and supervised work, preferably in a team. The balance between work and family is also important. We’re noticing that young people are no longer willing to be overwhelmed and are actively demanding their free time.
tsc: Starting a career as a pastor is also challenging. How can it be successful?
Benedikt Walker: It is important to support young professionals.Pastoral trainingTSC and IFGE already offer such a course, as well as a leadership development program, a church development program, and a course on conflict resolution. We’re making good progress here. Another thing that should be offered is a support program for churches that hire young pastors.
tsc: What are the problems with the municipalities?
Benedikt Walker: We fail in appreciation and encouragement. We should accept the younger generation with their strengths and weaknesses and value them. For example, by showing them development opportunities, providing them with further training, and offering guidance. And where have the encouragers gone? The younger generation longs for spiritual fathers and mothers. It used to be common practice to offer youth group leaders aTheology studiesto recommend and encourage them to do so. Let’s become more encouraging again!
tsc: What consequences does this have for contacts with interested parties?
Benedikt Walker: We have to do much more today than before to get interested people to start studying with us. That’s why we haveTrial offersand offer a popular academic advisory service. The year-long course serves as an orientation year. Combined degree programs such as Theology & Music are also a response to the needs of the younger generation.
tsc: At the 2024 Theological Forum, tsc and its network partners will address the pastor shortage. What are your hopes for this?
Benedikt Walker: Training centers and congregations can only find solutions together. I hope we can learn from each other and become more aware of the needs of the younger generation. I have two ideas for concrete measures: a career changer program similar to that of the Reformed Church, and increased engagement among the older generation. Dedicated seniors could take over senior work and relieve the pastor’s workload.
Dr. Benedikt Walker wants to encourage the younger generation to study theology.
