Ein ausserordentlich guter Jahrgang

The 2024 graduating class of St. Chrischona Theological Seminary (TSC) is an exceptionally well-received class. Of the 17 graduates of the bachelor’s programs, eight received First Class Honors. Therefore, four of the best bachelor’s theses were presented at the graduation ceremony on August 30.

Praise from the Rector

«You are an extraordinarily good class,» said Rector Dr. Benedikt Walker, praising the graduates. He explained that «studying theology requires a willingness to learn and diligence. It is a struggle with God for knowledge that takes time.» In addition to the Rector’s praise, Dr. Johan Siebers, representing Middlesex University London, also conveyed his congratulations. The TSC’s bachelor’s degree programs are validated at this university. Dr. Siebers emphasized the importance of the

Why did Adam and Eve eat from the tree?

The presentation of the year’s best bachelor’s theses was the most exciting part of the graduation ceremony. Ruben Sommer, who completed his bachelor’s degree in Communicative Theology, began the presentation with an exegetical thesis on the creation story in Genesis 2 and 3. He explored the question of why Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and chose an interesting approach to explain it. He compared the Genesis text with the wisdom theology from the Proverbs of Solomon. Ruben Sommer demonstrated that both texts address the question of whether one chooses the path of wisdom or that of foolishness.

On the value of biblical feasts

What relevance can biblical festivals still have for the religious life of Protestant Christians today? Simone Knierim addressed this question in her bachelor’s thesis. The graduate of theTheology & EducationHe emphasized the importance of festivals as «holy times» through which God creates a rhythm of life between work and rest. However, when God loses importance in society, festivals also lose their significance. Nevertheless, there is a need for rest and true encounter. This, he said, is an opportunity for Christians.

Thomas Rudin, President of the Club TSC , considered the decision to merge at the general meeting a «historic moment.» For Fritz Peyer, President of IGW, cooperation is a must, despite the differences: «This way, we can offer our communities and associations optimal programs for their young people.»

«Middlesex has been a great choice as our partner over the past decades, but ECTE is clearly the best choice as our new accreditation partner. It fits very well with our focus as an independent, Protestant theological seminary that provides training for Christian congregations and ministries. Through our collaboration with ECTE, we gain creative freedom to further improve our high quality of study and prepare ourselves for the future.»
